Program Background

Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics is a full-service orthopaedic clinic that operates 9 outpatient clinics and two ambulatory surgery centers in the southeast region. The clinic was founded in 1909 by Dr. Willis C. Campbell. Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics is recognized as a national and international leader in the field of orthopaedics. Campbell Clinic has always taken pride in being a leader in the teaching and education of orthopaedic medicine. Willis C. Campbell established the Campbell Clinic orthopaedic surgery residency in 1924. Later, in 1939, he published the first edition of the Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics, which is still used today to teach orthopaedic surgeons around the world.  The physician residency programs have continued to grow.

The Campbell Clinic physical therapy department has helped to edit and author chapters in Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics as well as to teach countless Physical Therapy students over the years. A formal mentorship program for all new graduate Physical Therapists was developed in 2015. Campbell Clinic has provided clinical education to allow many physical therapists to earn their specialty boards and continues to provide clinical mentorship to new physical therapists each year. Campbell Clinic strives to be a leader in the teaching and research of Physical Therapy. In 2022, the therapy department acknowledged that in order to continue to reach this mission, a quality pathway for Physical Therapists to become leaders in their field and to sit for Specialty Boards needed to be developed. As Campbell Clinic’s Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Director, Dr. Derek Kelly, said, “We are proud of our heritage at the Campbell Clinic, but are equally proud of our present and we look forward to our future.”
