Treatment Options

Spine Surgery

If conservative treatment options have failed, surgery may be necessary to correct some severe conditions or ailments of the spine. When you choose Campbell Clinic Spine Center, you can be certain you have selected the top team of spine surgeons in the Mid-South. The inherent risk associated with any surgery must be weighed against the severity of symptoms and potential benefits from undergoing such a procedure. For some patients, spine surgery can provide beneficial results and improve quality of life.

Minimally invasive spine surgery can help patients who need specific types of surgeries like cervical or lumbar fusion. This surgery uses a smaller incision, saving more soft tissue and helping patients recover faster. This usually also results in faster healing and less pain for the patient.

Minimally invasive spine surgery lowers the chance of adjacent segment degeneration. This condition occurs when the area above or below a repaired part of the spine weakens. Open spine surgery incisions are usually 5-6 inches long. However, surgeons may perform minimally invasive surgery with a much smaller incision.

Surgery outcomes in the outpatient setting show significant improvement compared to inpatient, long-incision spine surgery. Instead of an average five day stay in a hospital, a patient may only spend a few hours in the outpatient center before returning home. Reducing surgery time by half lowers the risk of infection and the need for blood transfusion.

Patients typically walk on the day of their surgery, as soon as they are awake and their anesthesia has worn off. and report less pain when walking. Patients at the Campbell Clinic Spine Center often have less pain when walking after spine procedures. Additionally, there have been no infections reported among patients to date, and they experience roughly only one-third of the blood loss of spine patients in the hospital setting.

Physiatry emerged after World War II. Its practitioners specialize in non-surgical treatment of the entire body – not only the neck and back. Rehabilitation doctors diagnose and treat pain, create treatment plans, give injections, and assess the patient’s whole body. They help patients regain function and improve their quality of life.

Physiatrists can treat many types of patients, like children, athletes, and people with spine issues. They often work in different areas of medicine. PM&R physicians may treat many specific problems including sciatica, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, myofacial pain and muscle problems.

A treatment plan may include injection therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, medication, or heat and ice application.

Injection therapy is a tool that physicians use both for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Localized injections may help a patient relieve pain and limit the need for surgery if they respond well to the treatment. When prescribing an injection for the treatment of soft tissue problems, one must consider both interventional and diagnostic implications.

Office-directed cortisone (or corticosteroid injections) may successfully help a patient with pain management. Doctors often prescribe injections alongside other treatments such as physical therapy or home exercises.

Ultrasound guided injections may also help provide greater accuracy thanks to real-time imaging capabilities. Ultrasound-guided injections help doctors accurately target specific areas without relying solely on patient feedback.

Another recent interventional option includes the expanding field of regenerative injections. College and pro athletes often choose this method to improve their performance after getting injured. This treatment works by injecting growth factors, like plasma, into diseased tendons or ligaments. Doctors use an ultrasound to see where the structure has become stagnant and insufficient.

Regenerative treatment takes time to work effectively, especially in chronic conditions. Being patient  is crucial for success. By encouraging the body’s natural healing abilities, you can achieve long-term structural improvements.

Duration of relief from injection therapy varies from patient to patient and may last from a few weeks to a few months.
